Retro-inspired themed video lyrics based on Marina And The Diamonds' song 'FROOT'.

Passion project

I chose this song because I really like the retro vibe that ir radiates, besides that it got in my head for some years. The theme of their album has a lot of visuals to play with and I was excited to just think about the creative process it would take for this video.

Actually, doing this project was not only an exercise with concept developtment but a perfect excuse to make type animation and motion design, which I already wanted to experience for a long time. I loved the result.

PROCESS

First I sat down to listen to the song and process what I felt with the rhythms, melody and so on, to be able to represent it in a moodboard and thus have a clear idea of the aesthetic that I was going to develop.

The concept of the FROOT album is directly linked to the fruits with shapes and colors lighting up in a universe suspended in infinity. I took inspiration from it and put it together with vintage, retro concepts and some of the 8-BIT aesthetic based on the melody of the song.

With this in mind, I started my moodboard to be able to define the song storyboard based on each verse.

I really like to explore the concept. While listening to the song it already gave me an idea of how certain lines of the song would look.

I went right to play with matching illustrations as well. I animated about a minute of the song.

It was so much fun getting into this colorful, playful, experimental world; and is what I enjoy the most. Feeling the freedom to play with shapes, rhythms and colors is what I love most and what I was most excited about doing this project.
